Abov: Elevate Your Whiskey

Issue 2 of Abov the Noise pours out a dram in memory of QE2, a monarch who saw more change in her lifetime than most ruling families have seen in generations. This month’s  edition highlights different scotch whiskies in homage to the Queen as well as one of our favorite whiskey clubs here in the US. So as before, pour yourself a dram and come with us as we help your whiskey news rise Abov the Noise!

Ballantine's Loyalist campaign ran in the 1970s, this one feels more like a threat than most
INDUSTRY NEWS

With the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth, not enough coverage has focused on her favorite whisky. Although apparently not shy in her consumption of a variety of beverages, she was especially fond of Royal Lochnagar, made more convenient by its close proximity next to her Scottish summer home. Good to know that the queen also has a favorite ‘pub around the corner’, just a little fancier.

“Royal warrants” are titles issued by the ruler and her heir to suppliers of the British royal family. Besides Royal Lochnagar, other brands with the claim are John Dewar, Johnnie Walker, The Famous Grouse, and Laphroig. It remains to be seen if the same brands will serve the new King and his heir.

WHAT'S IN YOUR GLASS?

Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend

Unintentional, but a fitting bottle name given the passing of the Queen. This blended whiskey isn’t overly complex, but has subtle notes of fruit, vanilla, and honey. While blended scotch often gets a bad rap, this one may be worth a try!

WHAT THE ABOV TEAM IS DRINKING

Adam – @OldestCrow

High West A Midwinter Night’s Dram, Act 8, Scene 5

In light of the fact that Autumn is just around the corner and we’ll be heading into colder months here in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s time to go for a hearty and spicy rye whiskey. High West A Midwinter Night’s Dram is characterized by warming spices like cinnamon, heat from the rye, and a full-body from the time spent finishing in Port barrels.

Though individual acts can be hard to acquire, and do have subtle differences, each act presents with a delightful similarity with key flavors. A single dram of this whiskey may be little, but she is fierce!

RATING: 80/100
MOST COVETED WHISK(E)Y THIS MONTH

Caol Ila 12 year Old

Balancing smoke and peat with a blend of sweet and savory, this single malt may just be the perfect introduction to the Islay region of Scotland. Not quite as intense a smoky flavor as some other Islay expressions, Caol Ila 12 is an excellent gateway to this unique style of scotch. The Abov community must agree, as this is consistently one of the most frequently wishlisted whiskeys in the app!
