Abov the Noise – April 2023

April 2023 – Issue #7

Elevate your April

Whiskey on trial in the US Supreme Court, madness for International Whisk(e)y Day, the world’s best scotch for 2023, and as always, our favorite reviews and what we’re drinking. It’s news and notes from around the world of whiskey in April!

Not vintage, but it was too appropriate for April and the 4/20 counterculture celebration. If you happen to live in or near Missouri here in the States, you can go grab yourself one of these "unique" bottles!
A BONE TO PICK

Jack Russell or Jack Daniel's?

It’s not often that whiskey makes an apperance in the US Supreme Court, but here we are. Jack Daniels claims that a dog toy company has infringed on their copyright by adding “Old No. 2” to their chew toy, which could equate the Tennessee Whiskey with dog poo. Given the average Abov rating of 62/100 after 1.7k reviews, the dog toy company might have a point.

MARCH IS TIME FOR TOURNAMENTS

Whiskey Madness

To celebrate International Whisk(e)y Day on March 27th, we ran a bracket-style tournament to determine the “last dram standing” from a list of 32 of the most popular whiskeys in our database. Voting happened on our Twitter, and after hundreds of votes across the week, one of the favorites took home the title.

WHAT'S IN YOUR GLASS?

Dewar’s 15 Year Old The Monarch

The blended whisky for those who normally scoff at blended whiskies. With a 27 Year Old at the core, this sweet and supple whisky is not your average blend. Maple, honey, and light smoke on the nose, followed by cream, vanilla, and still more honey on the palate. A long and warm finish make this a memorable dram.

USER REVIEW OF THE MONTH

shaundippy – Laphroaig Triple Wood – 91/100

“Absolutely fantastic. An instant favourite. A gorgeous marriage of sweet and smoke, I love it from nose to finish. My only criticism is a very slightly harsh finish.”

WHAT THE ABOV TEAM IS DRINKING

Adam – @OldestCrow

Suntory Toki

Not the rarest or most complex Japanese Whisky, but it is a fantastic and attainable introduction to this bright style of whiskey.

Crisp, fresh fruit flavors go hand in hand with a light body and clean finish to give an overall impression of a refreshing whiskey. Perfect for summer sipping as we head into the warmer months here in the Northern Hemisphere!

If you’ve never tried a Japanese Whisky before, give this one a look before you splurge on something more complicated. It may not be the most amazing whisky I’ve ever had, but it has opened a new door for me into the world of Japanese Whiskey!

RATING: 69/100
MOST COVETED WHISK(E)Y THIS MONTH

Eagle Rare 10 Year Old

They say Bourbon is a summer whiskey. so it’s not surprising to see this at the top of wishlists everywhere.

Toffee, citrus, and honey on the nose; sweet and dry on the palate with a hint of cocoa and a long lingering finish make this a crowd-pleaser just in time for summer!
